Deep Impact: a Large-scale Active Experiment on a Cometary Nucleus
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Deep Impact mission will provide the first data on the interior of a cometary nucleus and a comparison of those data with data on the surface. Two spacecraft, an impactor and a flyby spacecraft, will arrive at comet 9P/Tempel 1 on 4 July 2005 to create and observe the formation and final properties of a large crater that is predicted to be approximately 30-m deep with the dimensions of a football stadium. The flyby and impactor instruments will yield images and near infrared spectra (1– 5 μm) of the surface at unprecedented spatial resolutions both before and after the impact of a 350-kg spacecraft at 10.2 km/s. These data will provide unique information on the structure of the nucleus near the surface and its chemical composition. They will also used to interpret the evolutionary effects on remote sensing data and will indicate how those data can be used to better constrain conditions in the early solar system.

Comet Geology with Deep Impact Remote Sensing
The Deep Impact mission will provide the highest resolution images yet of a comet nucleus. Our knowledge of the makeup and structure of cometary nuclei, and the processes shaping their surfaces, is extremely limited, thus use of the Deep Impact data to show the geological context of the cratering experiment is crucial. This article briefly discusses some of the geological issues of
متن کاملExpectations for the Deep Impact collision from cometary nuclei modelling
Using the cometary nucleus model developed by Espinasse et al. (1991), we calculate the thermodynamical evolution of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 over a period of 360 years. Starting from an initially amorphous cometary nucleus which incorporates an icy mixture of H2O and CO, we show that, at the time of Deep Impact collision, the crater is expected to form at depths where ice is in its crystalline form. ...
متن کاملDeep Sub-surface Exploration of Cometary Nuclei
The surface regions of cometary nuclei are expected to be extensively modified by cosmic radiation and solar insolation. Induced state changes and associated sublimation and phase-change boundaries are expected to propagate deep into the interior. In the current exploration program a reconnaissance of the highly evolved upper meter of the cometary surface is comprehensively covered. However, th...
متن کاملComet 9p/tempel 1: Interpretation with the Deep Impact Results
According to our common understandings, the original surface of a shortperiod comet nucleus has been lost by sublimation processes during its close approaches to the Sun. Sublimation results in the formation of a dust mantle on the retreated surface and in chemical differentiation of ices over tens or hundreds of meters below the mantle. In the course of NASA’s Deep Impact mission, optical and ...
متن کاملApproaching the Internal Structure of the Nuclei of Comets
It has been understood, since comet Halley flybys, that the density of cometary nuclei is very low. More recently, observations of the solar light scattered by dust ejected from nuclei, together with elaborate simulations, have suggested that a fair amount of the refractory component consists in fluffy aggregates built up from sub-micronic grains [1, 2]. Deep Impact and Stardust have recently c...
